### Summary
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) is assigned to Health Administration Service providing coverage to all the Inpatient and Outpatient Clinics.

### Responsibilities
The AMSA is responsible for performing a variety of administrative and clerical duties and is the liaison between the nursing staff, physicians and other clinical staff in their assigned area and customers both internal and external to the medical center. It is expected that the AMSA at this level will function independently with minimal guidance from the supervisor, for new and/or unusual situations for recommendations of appropriate action. Duties include but are not limited to:
* Must be proficient in providing excellent customer service.Serves as the receptionist for the nursing station with the ability to determine the nature of calls and answering questions of visitors to the ward.
* Handles all patient information in accordance with provisions of the Privacy Act.
* Updates patient demographic information, next of kin, emergency contacts, insurance information, utilizing pre-registration in the VA Database.
* Accurately processes patient information, appointments, admission/discharge/transfer menus in VA Database.
* Notifies nursing staff for STAT and emergency orders.
* Maintains and reviews patient's electronic medical record according to set procedures.
* Arranges scheduling and coordination of inpatient appointments in an effort to avoid conflicts with the inpatient treatment schedule.
* Assists with orientation/on the job training of new staff.
* Inputs and extracts data of a highly technical nature.
* Acts as a member of the emergency team in cases of codes, disasters, fire, or other emergencies by handling phone calls, directing traffic, and functioning in whatever capacity is needed during the emergency.
* The incumbent is trained and competent to cover all inpatient wards and Nursing Home Care Units to cover staffing shortages to ensure the overall functions of the Health Administration Service.
* The Inpatient AMSA provides support to the Outpatient Specialty Clinic and must be proficient in understanding the scheduling package and associated business processes.
* The AMSA must maintain appointment schedules for one or more providers and clinic schedules for outpatient clinics.
* He/She must assist with clinic access, by adjusting appointment times, location, or dates as well as shift patients to other healthcare providers as conflict with staffing and/or coverage occurs.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

### Qualifications
Basic Requirements:United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
Education: One year above high school; or
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.Preferred Experience: Demonstrate the ability to work in a busy environment, multi-task, lead, and organize a large group of staff in various work areas to produce results, ensure compliance, as well as process and follow-up on a very high volume of phone calls or written requests from patients inquiring about appointments or their status on the waiting list.
Grade Determinations:
GS-6 Advanced MSA: Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) which is the full performance level for MSAs. At the GS-05 level, the MSA performs a full range of duties. The MSA is responsible for scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying and updating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of to GS-6.
Physical Requirements: The incumbent must work in a multi-screen computer environment being able to use computerized programs on the screens bilaterally. Work is mostly sedentary but may require some standing, walking, bending, twisting, and stair climbing. Mail delivery on the inpatient wards consists of walking and carrying of packages, envelopes, mail and light supplies.
